Summary: Officer Buckle gives safety speeches at school that bore the kids. But when he gets a police dog named Gloria, she adds fun to the speeches. When Officer Buckle feels like he's not important, he decides to quit but then a big accident changes his mind. The two main characters come to life through Rathman's cartoon-like drawings.
Classroom Ideas:This could be used to talk about theme, as it is stated at the end of the story. You could also do a character study of either Officer Buckle or Gloria, or use it to introduce safety tips for the school/classroom/playground.
