Peppe the Lamplighter
Author: Elisa Barton

Publisher: Harper Collins
Publication Year: 1992
Location: Knox County Public Library- Powell

Summary: Peppe is an Italian immigrant who gets a job lighting street lamps in order to help his ailing father support his family. His father disapproves but his job ends up helping to save his younger sister, and he makes the whole family proud. The way the illustrator depicts light is truly beautiful.
Classroom Ideas: This would be a perfect book for discussing early 20th century immigration and child labor. An art teacher could also use it to teach about using shading and color in illustrations.
