Summary: In this fractured fairy tale set in the 1930s, Jack and his mother run a small cafe in the middle of the city that loses its customers when an overpass is built. Jack trades their last pennies for a can of baked beans, and his mother is furious. When a "baked bean"stalk grows outside the restaurant, Jack climbs it to find an unhappy giant counting his coins who ends up following jack down to the restaurant for a happier life as a cook. The illustrations include amazing details, and the way they go between being framed like old photographs to complete fantastical spreads is charming.
Classroom Ideas:This fun book has a great theme about money not buying happiness! It would also do in a fairy tale unit, or to work on comparing and contrasting with the original tale.
