Summary: Jan Reynolds went to Bali in Southeast Asia and studied the native rice farmers there. In this book, she explains the connection of the Balinese religion to the cycle of life from the water goddess to the planting and harvesting rituals. She also traces the history of rice farming and the trouble that occurred in the 1960s when the government insisted that the traditional cycle of farming not be followed. The text is accompanied by photographs of the Bali and its people.
Classroom Ideas: A study of Asia or of farming would be idea for this book. Children could also compare this type of farming to the kind that we think of of in our country.
